“If you want to change your body, exercise. If you want to change your life, become a runner” – Neerav Varshney

Well, I am Neerav Varshney, working for TCS from last 12 years, and like most of IT professionals, always plan about leading ‘Active-Life’ through exercises, Gymming, playing sports etc. Every time when I started, I found it difficult to continue for long in absence of companion or motivation. But some life-changing event happened last year with me when I was attending a social event during Ganesh Chaturthi, and a group of like minded people were discussing to join a locally planned event “Hemisphere Green Greater Noida Run”, run of 5-10 KM. Just to unfold my curiosity and to enjoy the company of my friends, I also agreed to join them though I never attempted such a long outdoor run (Its very different than Treadmill ones!). The first feeling of running such a long distance was scaring the hell out of me, and I decided to practice by running smaller distances before the event. On the Event day, I witnessed hundreds of enthusiasts including Kids, Females, Senior citizens and even differently abled people with full zeal! It proved to be the run of my life as many like me were challenging their limits and all of us were cheered by colleagues. I surprised myself not by completing it successfully but also seeing myself in top 15 finishers!

I realized that this is one physical sport that I can continue for long as there are multiple such events happening throughout the year, and then you can get a company of great and like minded people running with you. I joined a local running group, members of which I met during the GGNR run and since then we kept connecting on frequent basis and ran in many different places. Now my weekends are very interesting, and I have found many good friends outside work space. Since then, I kept challenging myself and achieved many personal milestones like running multiple 10 KM runs, Half Marathons (21.1 KMs) and recently completed even a Full marathon (42.2 KM). As part of health benefits, I was able to shed some 10+ KGs during this, improved my eating habits and indirectly enhanced my immunity against seasonal attacks!

Running is the single most effective exercise to increase the life expectancy. An hour of running may add 7 hrs to your life. Also, the research indicated that running, irrespective of individual’s pace or mileage, reduces a person’s risk of premature death by almost 40 percent!! Regular running includes many benefits in anyone’s life, to name a few (as per my personal experience):

  • Improve Your Health
  • Lose Weight
  • Boost Your Confidence
  • Relieve Stress
  • Eliminate Depression
  • Prevent Disease. For women, running can actually help to lower risk of breast cancer

So, what are you waiting for, lets pull up your shocks (and shoes!) and start running to discover a different you!! Good luck and Happy running…
